about
a.s.o. (Lewie Day and Alia Seror-O'Neill) opened their world to us with 'Go On' in the fall of 2022. Now, in 2023, we're granted an extended audience in 'Rain Down.' Whereas the debut single was tantalisingly brief, its follow-up is expansive and wide-screen. 'Rain Down' has a more conventional structure and a longer run-time but is a no less bitter-sweet, emotionally resonant song. And like its predecessor, it leaves you hungry for more.
Once again, there's more than a hint of guarded menace in Seror-O'Neill's vocal delivery. Or is it hard-learned self-reliance? But then comes that chorus. The tension breaks, euphoria rises, the sweetest release, let the rain come down. Control is ceded but only on her terms. Make no mistake; this is some proper songwriting. Light and shade, push and pull.
The musical palette is broad and spacious. We still ride on the trip-hop blueprint and a familiar break, but there are nods to Middle Eastern music, the melancholic nostalgia of chill-out, and rave euphoria. Lewie shows that he can capture a genre's essence and then move beyond it, taking us to a new place all of his own.
More masterful end-times pop music from a.s.o. This is rich, complex, hooky, moreish, and utterly essential.
